Proctor Penetrometer is used for establishing the moisture-penetration resistance relation of fine grained soils. 

Compaction control in the field is exercised by determining the moisture content and dry density. Quick evaluation of this is done by developing curves in the laboratory, showing the relationship between moisture content versus dry density and penetration resistance, using Proctor Needles while conducting the Standard Compaction tests.  Consists of a body housing a spring a plunger calibrated to read 0-40 kg x 1 kg and a handle. Two stems are provided, a larger stem and a shorter stem, both graduated at 12.5 mm intervals, to indicate the depth of penetration. The larger stem and the smaller stem are used with needles of larger and smaller areas respectively.

 

The driver is by means of a rack and pinion ad is driven manually through a gearing arrangement. The gear box rack and pinion is fixed on two upright pillars and the movement of the rack is guided by a bracket and two pillars.

 

The loading is done hydraulically. Two pressure gauges 15cm dia. one of low capacity 0-60kg/sq.cm.in 0.5kg/cm.sq. divisions and other 0-160kg/cm.sq are provided to indicate the penetration resistance.

 

Isolation valve is provided to automatically isolate the lower range gauge when it reaches the maximum capacity. The valve can be adjusted and locked at desired values between 20 to 60kg/cm. sq.

 

The apparatus is used to measure antiskid performance of high grade roads ad airport pavement both in the lab ad in-situ. The apparatus consists of a spring loaded rubber slider mounted on a pendulum arm. The arm can be adjusted vertically from a rigid support column. The base has three adjustable feet so that the swing of the pendulum during the test moves through a truly circular path while operated directly on a road surface.
